Teams/Age Groups
Pasadena Youth runs coed teams for U8, U10, U12, U14 levels, boys teams for U16 and U18 levels, and girl teams for U15 and U18 levels.
Southern California Youth Rugby (SCYR) is USA Rugby’s State Governing Body responsible for all youth club and high school rugby in Southern California. The details below summarize the new SCYR Age/Weight Structure. Details of the Age/Weight structure are available on the SCYR website.
Season Schedules
Regular season:
Winter (Youth): U8-U14 runs from January to March with practice beginning in late fall/early winter.
Spring (Juniors): GU15-GU18, BU16 - BU18 runs from March to May practice beginning in February.
Summer Sevens Season: All ages runs from June - July.
U8 (Coed)
Age: 5 - 7 on September 1
Age 8 and 9 Options:
Age 8: May play U8 flag/non-contact rather than U10 tackle may do so
Age 9 Girls: May play U8 Flag as opposed to U10 contact
Game Structure
Flag rugby for boys and girls with up to 7 players per side.
Two 15-minute halves.
The primary purpose of rugby at this level is to introduce some core rugby skills: the catch and the pass.
The program also builds teamwork and discipline.
U10 (Coed)
Age: 8 - 9 on September 1
Age and Weight Consideration:
Age 8: Play U10 with no weight restrictions OR can choose to play Flag Rugby
Age 9: Play U10 as long as weigh 132 lbs and under. If over 132 lbs, will play U12
Age 9 Girls: may choose U8 Flag Rugby with no weight restrictions
Age 10: Play U10 if weigh 80 lbs and under
Game Structure
Tackle rugby for boys and girls with up to 10 players per side.
Two 20-minute halves.
Often their first experience in contact sports.
Tackle is introduced in safe progression, to ensure everyone's safety and enjoyment. Bumps and bruises are inevitable, but most parents will agree it is character building!
U12 (Coed)
Age: 10 - 11 on September 1
Age and Weight Consideration:
Age 10: Play U12 with no weight restrictions
Age 11: Play U12 as long as weigh 165 lbs and under. If over 165 lbs, will play U14
Age 12: Play U12 if weigh 100 lbs and under
Game Structure:
Tackle rugby for boys and girls with up to 12 players per side.
Two 20-minute halves.
Plays full contact rugby: tackles, rucks, mauls, and scrums. Starts introducing more strategic rugby, while continuing to build on key fundamentals: catching, passing, and safe tackling.
U14 (Coed)
Age: 12 - 13 on September 1
New structure of NOVICE & EXPERIENCED as determined by the SCYR Board
Age Consideration:
Age 12: Play U14. No weight restrictions at U14
Age 13: Play U14. No weight restrictions at U14
Age 14 Boys/Girls in Middle School: May play U14
Age 14 Boys/Girls in HS: Must play HS/GU15/BU16
Game Structure:
Tackle rugby for boys and girls with the traditional 15 players per side from this age group and up.
Two 25-minute halves, regulation field with goalposts
Increased skill development, while welcoming new players to the sport
U15 (Girls)
Age: 12 - 14 on September 1
Game Structure:
Girls tackle rugby
GU15 plays 7’s rugby with 7 players per side
Two 7-minute halves
U18 (Girls)
Age: 15 - 17 on September 1
Game Structure:
Girls tackle rugby
GU18 plays 7’s rugby with 7 players per side
Two 7-minute halves
U16 (Boys)
Age: 14 - 15 on September 1
Game Structure:
Players must be 15 or younger before September 1 leading into the season.
Discipline and personal responsibility is a major part of U16 rugby beyond just playing on the field.
U18 (Boys)
Age: 16 - 17 September 1
The next step for U18 players is collegiate rugby or going straight into our men's program. There are a number of colleges throughout the country that now offer different forms of scholarships for rugby.
